Leadtree/River Tamarind - Leucaena
Leucaena, also known as White Leadtree or River Tamarind, can be grown as a bonsai, particularly when cultivated from seed. It's known for its fast growth and ability to develop an aged trunk quickly, making it suitable for bonsai. The tree is also characterized by its feathery, mimosa-like foliage and white, powder-puff flower clusters.
Specific tips for Leucaena Bonsai:
Starting from seed: Leucaena can be grown from seed, which can be a rewarding way to develop a bonsai from scratch.
Branch structure: When designing the bonsai, focus on establishing the main branches early on, following the general principle of starting with three principal branches.
Pruning: Regular pruning is essential for maintaining the desired shape and size of the bonsai.
Wiring: Wiring can be used to shape the branches and create specific designs, but be mindful of the bark and avoid damaging it.
Potting: Choose a well-draining bonsai pot and soil mix.
Fertilizing: Fertilize during the growing season to support healthy growth.
Watering: Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
Germination Tip:
After soaking the seed overnight and the seed has not softened or swelled, you will need to scarify the seed coat. Scarifying is the process of weakening the seed coat, so that water and oxygen can enter the seed, in turn, kick starting germination. Seeds will remain dormant if not exposed to these elements
Scarifying can be achieved by gently rubbing the seed coat with sandpaper, you do not need to rub off the entire coating, just enough for water to enter.
NB: Only scarify the seed coat, do not damage the internal parts of the seed.
Once Scarifying has been done. submerge the seed again as per instructions
